Physiology in Forest Models: History and the Future

چکیده

Empirical models are standard tools in forest management. They provide quantitative information for management and planning that is accurate within the limits of sampling and measurement accuracy, but they are generally site-specific and cannot simulate the results of changing conditions. Mechanistic, or process-based models, based on the physiological processes that govern tree growth can, in principle, provide estimates of the potential productivity of sites for which no mensuration data exist, calculate realized growth and evaluate the effects of actions such as fertilisation or thinning, or the impact of pests and diseases on productivity. It should also be possible to use these models to evaluate the probable effects of climate change on forest growth. However, most process-based models contain too many poorly known parameters and their projections are not as reliable in practice as those of empirical models. In addition they have not, up to now, produced outputs of interest to those concerned with forest management. The reasons for this state of affairs are considered and a brief historical survey of some of the physiological research that, over the last 30 years, has produced the knowledge and information needed to produce useful, practical process-based forest models, is presented. The survey deals with light interception, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, water relations and nutrition. The evolution of process-based models is outlined, leading to the central thesis of the paper: that hybrid models, combining the advantages of process-based and conventional empirical models will be the management tools of the foreseeable future. The software for these models should be well-designed, robust, ‘user friendly’ and open, in the sense that it is freely available and can be modified by users. Brief comments on mensuration procedures for hybrid models, weather data and the use and values of Geographical Information Systems and remote sensing are provided.

Logistics and pretreatment of forest biomass

In large regions of the world, biomass is a very important source of energy. The global bioenergy market based on forest biomass is growing rapidly. About 92 % of the bioenergy in Sweden comes from forests. Biomass from forests is not homogenous. The locations, transport distances, and transport methods, can differ very much and the industries that need biomass as input prefer raw materials wit...

Comparison of Random Survival Forests for Competing Risks and Regression Models in Determining Mortality Risk Factors in Breast Cancer Patients in Mahdieh Center, Hamedan, Iran

Introduction: Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women worldwide. Patients with cancer may die due to disease progression or other types of events. These different event types are called competing risks. This study aimed to determine the factors affecting the survival of patients with breast cancer using three different approaches: cause-specific hazards regression, subdistri...

Performance evaluation of forest management plans (Case study: Iranian Caspian forests)

The aim of this research was to measure the relative efficiency of forest management plans in north of Iran. In order to fulfill the research, data of 12 forest management plans were collected from the financial balance sheets of Shafaroud Forest Company during a ten years period. First of all, basic Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models (BCC and CCR) were used to determine the efficiency. The...

Predicting the geographical distribution of Alopecurus textilis Boiss rangeland species on basis Consensus approach of climate change in Mazandaran province

The climate changes have an important role in distribution of plant species. Statistical species distribution models (SDMs) are widely used to predict the changes in species distribution under climate change scenarios. In the peresent study, the distribution of Alopecurus textilis in the current and future climate condition (2050) under the influence of climate change and two scenarios of RCP 4...
